Google begins rolling out YouTube Music app to older Wear OS smartwatches
When Google launched the new Wear OS 3 during I / O 2021, it also announced that a variety of its own apps would be updated and released. This included YouTube Music, but until now you had to own a Wear OS 3 smartwatch to enjoy it. As we saw earlier, the only smartwatch powered by Wear OS 3 is still the Galaxy Watch 4.
However, if you are a YouTube Music user and want to use the Wear OS app, you are in luck. According to The edge, Google has confirmed that the new app is now deployed on the following smartwatches:
- Fossil Gen 6
- Michael Kors Gen 6
- Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 GPS
- Mobvoi TicWatch E3
Additionally, Google has confirmed that it will start rolling out the new YouTube Music app to other Wear OS 2 smartwatches “later this year.”
Besides getting a solid app for YouTube Music, once it arrives, Premium subscribers can download songs to listen to them offline. It’s one of those features we’ve come to expect from all music streaming services, as Spotify also recently updated its Wear OS app with support for offline playback. But unlike YouTube Music, you can get this update now on smartwatches running Wear OS 2.0 and later.
Google’s decision to bring the YouTube Music app to older smartwatches is a great move, given that Google Play Music is definitely gone. Now we just have to wait for it to be available for download on our smartwatches before we can jump in and enjoy all of our tunes, even our phones are left behind.
