The Breeze is New Zealand’s most listened to music station – commercial radio survey results

Also celebrating substantial growth this year, Mai FM, with a nationwide audience surging 33,500. The Mai Morning Crew with Nickson, Tegan and Jordan took No. 1 as the premier musical breakfast show in Auckland.

Meanwhile, Magic’s increase in share saw the station lead its commercial competitor Newstalk ZB in the weekday morning and afternoon slots. Music and chat stations reached their highest ratings overall after increasing their audiences by over 30,000.

MediaWorks Content Director Leon Wratt says it’s positive to see the commercial radio landscape continue to thrive in the midst of such a difficult year.

“We are very happy to see such a strong result for radio despite the continued disruption of Covid-19,” Wratt said in a statement.

“With 84 percent of the total population listening to the radio every week, the platform continues to show its strength across the country.”

MediaWorks, which also owns Newshub, owns seven of the nation’s top ten commercial radio stations with The Breeze, The Edge, More FM, Mai FM, Magic, The Rock and The Sound, according to the latest results.

In the digital realm, MediaWorks Rova’s streaming app has seen a huge increase in podcast audiences, with downloads up 92% from last year’s figures and a 93% increase in l use of the organized playlists available on Rova Music + stations.

In September alone, more than 152,000 Kiwis broadcast approximately 4.4 million hours of radio through the app.
